No. 15 Bulldogs Complete Sweep Over UC Riverside

FRESNO, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Fresno State softball team completed its sweep over UC Riverside with a 10-3 victory in the nightcap.
Sophomore pitcher Laura Ferreira picked up her first win of the season in a relief role. Coming into the game in the fourth inning for starter Lori Hoffman, Ferreira (1-2) tossed the final 3.2 innings as she allowed a run on two hits while striking out three.
Six Bulldogs tallied multiple-hit games and three had multiple RBI games.
Sophomore All-America shortstop Christina Clark and junior All-America designated player Jamie Southern each went 3-4 and had two RBI. Freshman catcher Nichole Willis also had two RBI after going 2-4 at the plate.
Fresno State scored three runs in the first, added a run in the second before collecting four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.
In the first with one out, Willis tripled to right center to knock in two Bulldogs. Sophomore third baseman Veronica Green, who went 2-4, collected a RBI single for a 3-1 lead. In the second with two outs, Southern lined a shot up the middle to knock in Clark.
In the fourth with no outs, Clark roped a shot into right field to score two before Southern recorded another RBI single. The Bulldogs got their fourth run on a Highlander fielding error. In the fifth with runners on first and third, two Bulldogs scored when another UC Riverside fielding happened.
UC Riverside (3-16) struck first on a RBI double by third baseman Melissa Sanchez in the top of the first inning. The Highlanders got another run in the third on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Elizabeth Buck, who later went on to hit a two-out home run in the fifth.
In the series versus the Highlanders, Clark batted .600 (6-10) with three runs, three RBI, a double, a triple and a stolen base.
Fresno State (10-4) continues play at home this week when it hosts Santa Clara on Fri., March 5, 6:00 p.m., and No. 19 Pacific on Sat., March 6, 1:00 p.m.
