FRESNO, Calif. - It looked like the Bulldogs got some fire in their belly as they trailed 4-3 going into the seventh, but the Virginia Cavaliers squelched any type of come back as they went on to post a 9-3 victory over the 15th-ranked Fresno State softball team.
Virginia scored nine runs on 13 hits while Fresno State scored three runs on six hits while committing three errors.
The Cavaliers struck first with a run in the third, two in the fourth and another in the fifth before the 'Dogs tacked on three in the bottom of the six. In Virginia's final at bat, the Cavaliers took full advantage as they tallied five runs to put the game out of reach.
Trailing 4-3, Fresno State got its three runs in the sixth courtesy of RBI singles by junior designated player Jamie Southern and senior right fielder Lori Hoffman. Junior second baseman Leticia Pacheco recorded a sacrifice fly for the third run.
In the seventh, reliever Laura Ferreira allowed five runs on six hits while the Bulldog defense had two errors. Coming into the game for starter Amanda Wolf, Ferreira pitched 3.0 innings and allowed seven hits, five runs (two earned) while striking out three.
Virginia improved to 11-9 overall while Fresno State fell to 16-6. UVA pitcher Erin Horn picked up the win to improve to 5-3 while Wolf fell to 1-2.
Fresno State will look to regroup before hosting its own Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic, which will run Thursday-Sunday, March 11-14, at Bulldog Diamond.
