RENO, Nev. - Paced by a 17-hit attack and eight strong innings from starter Travis Sutton, Nevada defeated Fresno State 20-2 Friday at Peccole Park. The 20 runs marked the second straight 20-plus run performance by Nevada. The Pack plated 27 runs last Saturday at Louisiana Tech.
The Wolf Pack (19-17 overall) moved into sole possession of third place with a 5-5 mark in conference play while the Bulldogs (16-23 overall) slipped to fourth in the league with a 4-6 ledger.
Sutton (6-3) scattered a pair of runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three to earn his sixth win of the year. A one out, two-run homer in the first to Richie Robnett was the only runs Sutton would allow all day. Robnett's blast was his team high seventh of the season and extended his hitting streak to a team high 13 games.
Nevada scored in each of the first six innings including a nine-run rally in the second that broke the game open. Nevada tallied six hits, three walks and a hit batter in the inning and chased Bulldog starter David Griffin after the first five men reached in the frame. Griffin allowed eight runs on six hits and three walks over an inning-plus of work to fall to 4-3 on the season. Combined with seven walks by four Fresno State relievers, the Bulldogs walked a team season high 10 batters.
All nine of the Wolf Pack's position players tallied at least a hit on the afternoon. First baseman Ben Mummy went 3-3 with five RBI and four runs scored including a two-run single in the second and a three-run double in the fourth. Designated hitter Austin Graham hit his third home run of the season with a two-run round tripper in the sixth.
The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m.
