FRESNO, Calif. - Hawai'i starter Ricky Bauer scattered two runs on nine hits while striking out three over 7 1/3 innings to lead the Rainbows to a 4-2 win over Fresno State Friday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs dropped to 17-25 overall including 5-8 in the WAC while UH pushed its season record to 24-13 with an 8-5 mark in conference play.
Bauer (7-2) earned his team leading seventh win of the season and Darrell Fisherbaugh recorded the final five outs of the game to notch his fifth save of the year.
Fresno State starter Michael Cooper (2-7) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on 11 hits while fanning four over seven innings
UH broke through in the top of the third with a one-out RBI single from outfielder Jaziel Mendoza to score Greg Kish, who opened the inning with a double to left. The Rainbows plated its second run in the fourth on an infield single Kish. In the seventh, Andrew Sansaver socked his first home run of the year with a two-run blast over the center field fence.
Fresno State sophomore infielder Brandon Esparza gave the Bulldogs their first run of the game on a solo home run in the seventh. Senior catcher Brandon Marcelli trimmed the lead in half on an RBI single in the eighth to plate sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett. Marcelli (3-4) had a game high three hits while Robnett went 2-4 to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. The streak is the longest for a Bulldog since Casey McGehee hit safely in 31 straight during the 2002 season (March 15-May 18).
The series continues Saturday at 6:30 p.m. UH righthander Stephen Bryant (5-2, 2.03) is scheduled to oppose Fresno State sophomore righty Matt Garza (2-2, 5.58). Former Fresno State head coach Pete Beiden will have his jersey retired in a ceremony prior to the start of the sixth inning.
