FRESNO, Calif. - Chase Moore hit a game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the tenth inning as Fresno State recorded a thrilling 9-7 come-from-behind victory over No. 2 Rice Saturday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs improved to 25-29 overall and 13-12 in the WAC while the Owls slipped to 40-10 on the season and 21-4 in conference play.
Freshman outfielder Nick Moresi led off the tenth with a single to left, setting the stage for Moore's heroics against Rice reliever Adam Hale. The walk-off homer was the first of the season for the Bulldogs and was the fourth round tripper of the year for Moore. Hale (1-3) suffered his third loss of the year, allowing two runs on three hits over two innings.
Rice jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBI doubles by Paul Janish and Adam Morris and a run scoring single from Josh Rodriguez.
Bulldog senior infielder Chris Patrick scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first to put the club on the board. Patrick tallied career hit No. 200 with a double down the left field line with one out in the inning. In his next at-bat, Patrick tripled with one out in the third and scored on Richie Robnett's sacrifice fly, trimming the deficit to 4-2.
The Owls extended the lead back to four with two runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Austin Davis and a fielder's choice RBI by Paul Janish. Janish was 4-6 with a double and two RBI to pace the Owls 15-hit attack. The Bulldogs cut the lead in half again in the fifth on run scoring singles by Ryan Haag and Chris Patrick. Haag went 2-4 in the game to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
Adam Rodgers gave the Owls a 7-4 lead with seventh homer of the year to lead off the seventh.
Fresno State tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the eighth on a pinch hit three-run homer by senior infielder Kyle Wilson. The homer was Wilson's sixth of the year.
Rudy Quinonez (4-9) struck out three in 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn his fourth win of the year.
The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. Fresno State senior lefthander David Griffin (4-3, 5.11) is scheduled to oppose Rice righty Jeff Niemann (5-2, 2.58).
