Bulldogs Take Series Opener Against Nevada, 12-5

FRESNO, Calif. - Chris Patrick hit a go-ahead two run double in the fourth inning, keying a six-run rally as Fresno State overcame an early four-run deficit to defeat Nevada 12-5 Friday night at Beiden Field.
Winners of seven of its last nine games, the Bulldogs improved to 27-29 on the season and 15-12 in the WAC while the Wolf Pack slipped to 30-27 overall and 14-14 in conference play.
Patrick also drove in Fresno State's first run of the game in the third to spark a four-run frame that knotted the game at 4-4.
The Wolf Pack grabbed a 4-0 lead after two-and-a-half innings with a pair of runs in the first and third. In the first, Jacob Butler delivered a run scoring ground out and Joe Mercer hit a sacrifice fly. Chris Gimenez clubbed his 13th home run of the season with a two-run blast in the third.
Senior catcher Brandon Marcelli keyed a four-run rally in the home half of the third with a two-run triple to center field. Marcelli blasted a two-run homer to center in the fourth as well, giving him a game high four RBI. Freshman infielder Christian Vitters followed Marcelli with his eighth home run of the year, marking the third time this season that the Bulldogs have hit back-to-back home runs.
Bulldog sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett doubled twice to move into third place on the school's single season record list with 25. Senior infielder Ryan Haag was 2-5 with two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
Bulldog starter Matt Garza (6-3) notched his team high sixth win of the season, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out six in five innings of work.
Junior righthander Matt Scott struck out three in four scoreless innings of work to tally his first career save.
Wolf Pack starter Travis Sutton (8-5) was saddled with his fifth loss of the year, yielding 10 runs (six earned) on 11 hits and one walk in 3 2/3 innings of work.
The series continues Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Bulldog freshman lefthander Brandon Miller (5-3, 5.50) is scheduled to oppose Nevada righty Ryan Rodriguez (5-7, 5.76).
