San Jose State walked off Fresno State, scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to hand the Bulldogs an 8-7 loss at Excite Ballpark. Fresno State erased a three-run deficit in the top of the ninth and briefly took the lead before the Spartans answered in their final at-bat. The Bulldogs close the season with a 14-38-1 record (3-20-1 MW).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs were held scoreless through six innings by San Jose State starter Dylan Smith before breaking through in the seventh. Mikey Boyd singled and Marcus Nolen followed with a base hit to put two runners aboard. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Austin Young delivered a two-run single in his pinch-hit appearance to cut the deficit to 4-2.
San Jose State added an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning after Peyton Rowles doubled and later scored on a Fresno State throwing error, extending the Spartans' lead to 5-2.
Fresno State mounted a dramatic rally in the ninth inning. Boyd opened the frame with a walk and Nolen doubled to left center to put runners at second and third. Griffen Sotomayor drove in a run with a single before Jett Ruby added a sacrifice fly to trim the lead to one. Young then gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the day with a two-run homer to deep left field, and Sky Collins followed immediately with a solo shot to make it 7-5.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Rocco Caballero led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run before the Spartans put two more runners aboard. Brent Cota delivered the final blow with a walk-off two-run double to left center, sealing the 8-7 win for San Jose State.
Jordan Haver started for Fresno State and struck out six over five innings while allowing four runs. Wyatt Thornbury tossed a scoreless sixth inning before BJ Rodriguez took the loss in relief.
Nolen led the Bulldogs offensively with three hits, while Young finished with four RBIs on a two-run single and go-ahead homer. Collins also homered in the loss as Fresno State totaled 10 hits.
