Fresno, Calif. -
Fresno State's home course, Woodward Park was the site of a showdown for many of the top teams in the area this weekend. The Bulldogs used the strength of their depth to put together a decent showing with competition that was at a very high level. The team came in 7th out of 10 teams in a very strong field, which included the 5th place team in the Western Region, UC Santa Barbara, and a favorite for the Division II championship, Chico State.
Sophomore Andrea Buckner (Yorba Linda, Calif.) led the team with a finish just outside the top 20, at 21st in 18:42. The rest of the team's scoring runners all placed with each other, putting four runners in spots 43-48. All of the top five Fresno runners improved on their times in the Bronco Invitational. The most impressive of these gains was made by freshman Marina Santana (Woodland Hills, Calif.), who improved on last weeks time by 1:46, and was the team's second fastest runner.
In the team contest, UC Santa Barbara dominated the field, with their five scoring runners crossing the line in a single group, placing 2nd through 6th. The overall race winner was former Fresno State Runner Kara June, who finished in 17:56.
