FRESNO, Calif. - In their home debut, the Bulldogs opened volleyball tournament play in their own Fresno State Invitational with a five-game victory over San Francisco at the North Gym this evening.
Fresno State (5-3) was led by a trio of outside hitters in senior Kristen Fenton (20 kills, 16 digs, 4 blocks), sophomore Tuli Peters (11 kills, 21 digs, 9 blocks) and freshman Christianna Reneau (19 kills, 16 digs, 2 blocks).
San Francisco (3-7) was led by Kristin Hasselberg (22 kills, 9 digs, 1 block) and KeLicia Shorts (13 kills, 2 digs, 6 blocks).
Senior outside hitter/middle blocker Amanda Magalei collected a match-high 11 blocks while chipping in six kills. Freshman libero Yuko Mori had 10 digs and a pair of service aces in the win.
With four 'Dogs tallying double-digit digs, Fresno State hit .217 as it won the battle at the net in blocks (16-9) against the Dons. San Francisco hit .170 while having four players in double-figure digs.
"Our strategy was to block and defend," head coach Lindy Vivas said. "The team hung in there and played tough; they hung in there to the end. We're going to need to serve tougher, however, to get things rolling better.
"We used two setters," Vivas continued. "Robyn (Keune) was doing fine but Ilima (Sam Fong) put up a better paced ball and that kept our momentum more consistent.
"Tiffany (Bishop) did well as she has been fighting through some sickness," Vivas stated. "She'll get back in the rhythm of the game very quickly.
"We are working hard in not letting the third game get away from us," Vivas added. "We have to keep working on not having a let down and push through it."
The 'Dogs, who are 2-1 in their last three matches, continue tournament play tomorrow afternoon with meetings against UNLV at 3:00 p.m. and San Diego State at 7:30 p.m.
