FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team picked up its second sweep of the day when the Bulldogs posted a 30-23, 30-24, 30-22 victory over San Diego State this evening at the North Gym.
Fresno State was led by Bulldog outside hitters Christianna Reneau and Kristen Fenton. Reneau tallied 14 kills and added six digs and three blocks while Fenton recorded 11 kills and chipped in seven digs and two blocks.
Freshman setter Ilima Sam Fong quarterbacked the 'Dogs and picked up a double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Tuli Peters posted a team-high 12 digs and added three blocks. Senior middle blocker Tiffany Bishop collected six kills and had a match-high six blocks.
San Diego State (0-9) did not have one player in double-figure kills as Ashley Bowker and Melissa Stapley each notched eight kills a piece. Aime Cordeiro led all players in digs with 21.
Fresno State hit a solid .304 as San Diego State was held to a .101 hitting efficiency. At the net, the 'Dogs took command (9.5-6) while the Aztecs won the dig battle (50-47).
"I thought tonight's match went a lot smoother," head coach Lindy Vivas said. "There was a lot more communication and they each fed off one another. Our ball control was better and our middle attack was more successful.
"I was pleased with the play of all our middles as they each came into the match and did a nice job," Vivas continued. "Ilima (Sam Fong) is getting more comfortable as she is understanding the flow of the game much better.
"I think tonight's performance was one of our best to date," Vivas added. "We looked composed and didn't allow the opposition to take command."
Fresno State (7-3) wraps up invitational play tomorrow evening with a 5:30 p.m. match against Oral Roberts (3-7).
