PALO ALTO, Calif. - Fresno State Baseball opened the 2005 season in tough fashion as the Bulldogs lost 12-1 against No. 6 Stanford in Palo Alto on Saturday. This was the first game of the series after rain washed out the first game, scheduled for Friday. Mark Ramanczuk picked up the win for the Cardinal, his first on the year.
The Bulldogs were looking to jump out to a quick start after having to wait 20 hours to get their season started, and did just that. Sophomore DeAndre Miller started off the game with a solid single up the middle against Stanford starter Mark Romanczuk. Romanczuk seemed a little rattled, and would walk the next three Fresno State batters to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead before ending the inning.
Frenso State would hold that lead until the third inning, when Stanford would pick up two runs off of Fresno State starter Brandon Miller courtesy of a 2-run single from John Mayberry Jr.
The floodgates would then open in the fourth inning, as the Cardinal would combine for seven runs and five hits against Brandon Miller and Doug Fister, to increaase the score to 9-1. The Cardinal would put together another two runs off of a homerun by Jed Lowerie in the fifth inning, and would manufacture one more run off of Jason Breckley in the seventh to get to the final 12-1 mark.
Mark Romanczuk picked up the win for the Cardinal, pitching five innings, allowing 2 hits and one run, while walking four and striking out five, and Matt Leva got the save for Stanford, pitching four innings of effective relief. The loss for Fresno State goes to Brandon Miller, his first.
The Bulldogs will finish the series against Stanford Sunday, in a double-header starting at 1 p.m. RHP Ryan Penn will face RHP Jeff Gilmore in the first game, and RHP Matt Garza will face RHP Greg Reynolds in the second game.
