RENO, Nev. (AP) - Nevada's Nick Fazekas missed two chances to send the game into overtime during the final 3 seconds as Fresno State held on for a 66-63 upset of the Wolf Pack on Saturday night.
He missed a 5-foot jumper with 3 seconds left. Then after Fresno State's JaVance Coleman missed a free throw with 1.2 seconds to play, Fazekas rattled an 80-foot desperation heave off the rim as time expired.
The Bulldogs (12-6, 6-3 WAC) moved into sole possession of third place in the league standings -- just one game behind both Nevada and UTEP -- by hitting 4-of-6 free throws in the final 26 seconds to hold off the Wolf Pack.
The Wolf Pack (14-5, 7-2) eliminated a 10-point first-half deficit but never caught the Bulldogs after falling behind 50-38 on a basket by Fresno State center Mustafa Al-Sayyad with 11:46 to play.
The Wolf Pack missed free throws on two separate trips to the line that would have tied the game.
Fresno State hit 8-of-16 3-point attempts, while Nevada hit just 1-of-10.
Al-Sayyad led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Guards Donovan Morris, who hit 3-of-4 3-pointers, and Coleman each had 14 points.
Fazekas led all scorers with 23 points and added 10 rebounds. Senior Kevinn Pinkney added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Wolf Pack. The announced crowd of 11,784 was the largest in the 22-year history of Lawlor Events Center.
The win improved Fresno State to 5-2 this year in games decided by five points or less.
