Volleyball Continues Homestand Saturday Against Nevada

Fresno State enters one of the lighter weeks on the schedule, playing only one home match this week against the Nevada Wolfpack. Nevada enters the week a half-game behind Hawai'i for the conference lead with a 7-1 record in WAC play, and a 12-6 record overall. Nevada solidified their place in the conference with two wins last week, sweeping Boise State in three games before beating Utah State in four games to move out of a tie for second place in the conference. Nevada is led by outside hitter Salaia Salave'a, who is second in the conference in kills per game averaging 4.39 kills per game, and is fifth in the conference, hitting .310 on the season. Salave'a was also named the WAC Player of the Week after recording the only triple-double in the WAC this season. The Bulldogs will face the Wolfpack on Saturday, Oct. 22 when the two teams meet in the North Gym. That match will begin at 1 p.m., and will be carried live by ESPN Radio 1430 in their first volleyball broadcast of the 2005 season. Last Week Revisited
Volleyball was at home for two matches last week, but was unable to get victories against New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech in regurlarly scheduled conference matches. New Mexico State was first up for the Bulldogs on Thursday night, but the Aggies won in three straight games behind the play of Kim Oguh, who had 17 kills along with WAC Player of the Week Amber Simpson, who had 9 kills and 5 block assists. The second match of the week was considerably more competitve when Fresno State played Louisiana Tech on Saturday night. The second meeting of the year between these two teams, Lousiana Tech took the first game, but Fresno State won the next two before finally fallling in an extended fifth game 20-18. Fresno State out-performed the Lady Techsters in many key areas in the match, as the Bulldogs set season highs with 78 kills and 77 asssists while holding Louisiana Tech to 64 kills. In addition the Bulldogs outhit Louisiana Tech .226 to .211, and the team outdug the Lady Techsters 81 to 72, led by libero Cheryl Selenak who had 26 digs in the match. Fresno State also had one of their most balanced attacks of the year in the match. Sophomore Alisha McKee recorded 23 kills, and junior Alison Pitton added 21 to mark the first time the Fresno State had multiple 20 kill players this season. Briana Rempel was almost the third, making 19 kills in the match, but Louisiana Tech made the points in the end when it mattered, including 9 total blocks from Carly Johnson to get the win.
2005 Volleyball Ticket Promotions
All year fans will have the chance to enter Fresno State Volleyball matches for free by participating in two different promotions. Launching these programs for the first time, the first 100 individuals who arrive one hour early to match time will be eligible to receive a free admission pass. In addition, elementary school students can also enter volleyball matches for free this season by wearing any clothing identifying the school that they attend.
