Fresno, Calif. - The Bulldogs stayed competitive through most of the night, but No. 10 Hawai'i proved to be too strong for the Bulldogs as the Rainbow Wahine toppled Fresno State 24-30, 17-30, 24-30 on Saturday. The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Alisha McKee, who had 14 kills on .400 hitting, but the team as a whole was held to a .156 hitting percentage. Hawai'i was able to hit .325, and out-dug the Bulldogs 64-51 over the match to pace their way to the three-game victory.
Hawai'i came out quickly in the match, making a six point run to take a 10-4 lead after the two teams began the match at a 4-4 tie. The Rainbow Wahine continued to extend their lead in the first game, grabbing a 20-10 lead after kills from Susie Boogaard and Sarah Mason. The two teams then continued to trade service until Hawai'i almost had the game closed out at 28-18. The Bulldogs made a run at the end though, sparked by a miss from the Wahine's Sarah Mason and an Alisha McKee kill, to cut the lead to 28-24, but Hawai'i closed out the game with a block and a kill from Mason.
The second game was controlled by Hawai'i, who improved on .300 hitting in the first game to hit .472 with only 3 errors on the way to a 30-17 win. The final stanza was the closest of the match, with neither team being able to gain any momentum until late, and Hawai'i was only able to muster one more kill than Fresno State. Fresno State was also to get its most significant lead in that game, staying even with the Wahine through the first 20 points, then grabbing a 12-10 lead with a kill from Angela Wiggins and a block by Wiggins and Kasie Spencer. Hawai'i made a run of their own though, and after tying the match at 13 extended a 17-13 lead whitch the Bulldogs were never able to entirely recover from. Fresno State pulled to within one at 21-20 after a block from Jessica Peterson and Alisha McKee, but Hawai'i took five straight points and finished out the match with a 30-24 win in the final game.
The Bulldogs stay at home next week, getting a chance to solidify a higher seed in the WAC tournament by hosting Boise State, who came into Saturday's action with 2-8 conference record. That match will be held on Thursday night at 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, Fresno State takes a break from WAC play on Senior Night, when the Bulldogs face Cal State Northridge and recognize their two graduating seniors, Robyn Keune and Briana Rempel. Saturday's match begins at 3 p.m. in the North Gym.
