FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 22/17 Fresno State softball team used two grand slams in the first game of a doubleheader against UC Santa Barbara to pick up a 9-5 victory.
Sophomore Rachael Donaldson hit her first grand slam in the Bulldogs' five-run third while junior All-America shortstop Christina Clark belted her fourth career grand slam in the 'Dogs four-run sixth as all the runs scored came on home runs.
Junior right hander Laura Ferreira recorded her first win of the year in relief of starter Amanda Nesbitt. Ferreira allowed one hit in the final 2.2 innings as she fanned three in nine batters faced.
UC Santa Barbara struck first and had a 2-0 lead before the bats came alive for Fresno State. In the bottom of the third, Donaldson connected for her third home run of the season with no outs to left field.
The Gauchos stayed with the Bulldogs and tied the game at 5-5 when UCSB scored three in the top of the fifth.
Fresno State answered back two innings later when Clark recorded her sixth long ball of the season with one out to left field.
In Bulldogs' softball history, this is the first game in which two grand slams were hit in a single game as they were No. 17 & 18 in the school's annals since 1991. Still further, only one grand slam had been hit at Bulldog Diamond since 1991 as Clark hit the first one on May 10, 2003 against Louisiana Tech.
