FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team continued its up and down trend by posting an easy 7-0 sweep of Princeton on Wednesday at the Wathen Tennis Center.
The 43rd-ranked Bulldogs (5-5) have alternated wins and losses in the past seven matches, dating back to a 4-3 victory over Oklahoma State on Feb. 25. They have also won 17 of their past 19 contests at home.
Fresno State was never in trouble against the Tigers (4-5), who are in the midst of a five-match West Coast road trip during their spring break.
"Princeton has given some good teams trouble lately," said head coach Simon Thibodeau, referring specifically to the Tigers' narrow 4-3 loss to No. 29 Oregon on Sunday. "So to come out and win as decisively as we did makes me very happy. We've got a crucial period coming up with a lot of ranked teams on the road, so this would be a great time to start playing very well."
The Bulldogs had an especially easy go of things in doubles, dropping only four games in the three matches. At No. 1, 22nd-ranked Courtney Jantz and Lucia Sainz blanked Stephanie Berg and Jessica Siebel 8-0. It was the seventh win in a row for Jantz and Sainz, who improved to 17-4 (8-2 dual) on the season.
In singles, Fresno State won four matches in straight sets. In the No. 2 slot, Lucia Tallo snapped her seven-match losing streak with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Darcy Robertson. At No. 1 singles, 71st-ranked Katharina Winterhalter breezed past Jessica Siebel 6-4, 6-1.
Also winning in straight sets were Courtney Jantz at No. 4 and Fadzai Masiyazi at No. 6. Lucia Sainz and Jacqui Haskett both won third-set supertiebreakers.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a doubleheader tomorrow at the Wathen Tennis Center. Fresno State will host Syracuse at 9 a.m. and WAC foe SMU at 2 p.m.
