Senior All-America pitcher Jamie Southern (Clovis, Calif.) became the 16th NCAA Division I pitcher to amass 1,200 career strikeouts on April 15 when she struck out 12 Spartans in Fresno State's 4-0 win over San Jose State. With 1,211 strikeouts to date, Southern also posted her 49th career 10-strikeout game. In addition, she notched her 70th career shutout (only the second Bulldog and 10th NCAA D1 player to reach 70) to move up to No. 9 all-time in the NCAA Division I charts as well as tying the WAC's all-time win mark of 106 victories. Just one victory shy of tying her career-best mark of consecutive wins, Southern notched a season-high 11 straight victories that ran from March 9-April 15. The streak ranks eighth-best in school history. In this stretch, Southern went 11-0 with seven shutouts while allowing six runs (four earned) and striking out 93 (8.7 strikeouts per 7/IP) in 72.0 innings for a 0.38 ERA. On the year, she also owns a season-best mark of 42.1 innings without an earned run. Southern will be looking to become the WAC's and Fresno State's outright all-time win leader this week. In the WAC, she currently shares the record with former Bulldog All-American Amanda Scott (106) while two victories shy of owing the school's all-time win mark held by another Bulldog All-American Terry Carpenter (107, 1989-92). |
