Quite a Weekend at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. - A Western Athletic Conference title, record-breaking performances and standout individual achievements. Roll all of those together in one month, and that would make any fan of Fresno State athletics happy.But consider all of that happened over the course of three days, and it's easy to consider last weekend by far the Bulldogs' most successful thus far in 2005.
From Jamie Southern to Mark Modglin to Matt Garza to Katharina Winterhalter, Fresno State student-athletes achieved at an incredibly high level last weekend. Here is a rundown of the weekend at the was at Fresno State:
- Jamie Southern/Fresno State Softball: No. 17/20 Fresno State went 3-0 last week, sweeping Tulsa to remain in first place in the WAC. Southern won all three games, in the process becoming the league and school's all-time career wins leader. She was named the National Player of the Week and WAC Pitcher of the Week, and head coach Margie Wright won her 500th game at Bulldog Diamond.
- Fresno State Women's Tennis: The Bulldogs claimed their fourth consecutive WAC title by breezing past Rice 4-0 on Saturday in Honolulu. First-team all-conference honoree Katharina Winterhalter went 3-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles to lead Fresno State, which tied a Western Athletic Conference record, formerly held solely by BYU, by winning its fifth conference crown overall and fourth in a row.
- Matt Garza/Fresno State Baseball: Garza threw a two-hitter over eight innings to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-1 win over conference-leading Nevada on Friday night. The Bulldogs took two of three from the Wolf Pack over the weekend and are now just 2.5 games behind Rice for first place in the league standings.
- Mark Modglin/Fresno State Men's Golf: Modglin claimed the individual title while the Bulldogs won the team title at the BYU Cougar Classic last weekend. Modglin fired rounds of 66-64-72 for a 202 (14-under-par) and was named the WAC Men's Golfer of the Week as well as Toyota/gobulldogs.com Athlete of the Week. His teammates Ryan Carter and Brian Kelley finished second and third, respectively. As a team, the Bulldogs finished the event 44-under.
- Track and Field: The women's track team won the Cal-Nevada Championships last week at Warmerdam Field. The Bulldog men, led by Chris Berrian, finished second behind Cal State Northridge. Berrian was named the WAC Athlete of the Week and the event's Most Outstanding Performer after claiming titles in the 100- and 200-meter races. He also ran the third leg of the first-place 4 x 100-meter relay squad.
- Fresno State Football: Logan Mankins became the fourth Bulldog drafted in the first round -- and second since 2001 -- when he was selected by the two-time defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots with the 32nd pick. James Sanders was drafted in the fourth round, also by the Patriots. Brett Visintainer, Stephen Spach, Therrian Fontenot, Duncan Reid and Claude Sanders all signed free agent contracts.
- Fresno State Women's Golf: In the program's first year, the Bulldogs finished a solid fourth at the WAC Championships in Boise, Idaho, while precocious freshman Laura Luethke received an invitation to compete individually in the NCAA Western Regionals. The event takes place May 5-7 in Las Cruces, N.M. Luethke also earned WAC Freshman of the Year honors while Angie Cates was the WAC Coach of the Year.
