FRESNO, Calif.- Junior Cortney Sobrero scored two first half-goals and paced an offensive-minded Fresno State attack in a 4-1 exhibition victory over cross-town rival Fresno Pacific on Saturday night at Steinert Field.
As an exhibition match, statistics were kept but do not count in regular season totals.
Freshman Yvette Flores and junior Erika Sugano added insurance goals late in the game for the Bulldogs, who outshot the Sunbirds 22-8. Fresno State controlled the tempo throughout the contest, keeping constant pressure on an overmatched Sunbird defense. The Bulldogs also held an 11-5 edge in the corner kick department.
Sobrero's two scores in the first half gave the `Dogs a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. At the 23:15 mark, Sobrero stole a pass away from an FPU defender, slipped past netminder Audra Carter and fired a shot into the open net. Nine minutes later, she trapped a pass from junior Antonea Lugo and found the net once again. Sobrero, who recorded six shots, was then lifted from the match with the `Dogs in front 2-0.
Fresno Pacific's Beth Burns registered the Sunbirds' only goal of the evening, collecting a deflection and beating Bulldog keeper Chelsea Mays in the 52nd minute.
The Bulldogs would answer with two additional scores, both coming in the final 20 minutes of regulation. In the 73rd minute, Flores pivoted around a defender and lofted a shot into an open pocket of the net for a 3-1 lead. Eight minutes later, junior Erika Sugano, who tallied three shots, made it 4-1 when she scored from 25 yards out following an assist from sophomore Mercedes Splettstoesser.
Freshman Nicole Gutierrez added three shots for the `Dogs.
Junior Angie Larsen started for Fresno State in goal, followed by Mays and junior Jeannette Paine.
Fresno State officially opens the season on Friday, Aug. 26, against UC Santa Barbara. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
