FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Director of Athletics Thomas Boeh announced today the hiring of two new senior members of the athletics department. Betsy Mosher and Paul Ladwig join the Bulldog program with outstanding credentials.
Mosher was named the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration and Program Integrity. Her background includes prominent leadership positions in athletics departments at three NCAA Division I institutions, plus compliance positions with the NCAA and the Big Ten Office. She has served on various conference and NCAA committees. She will begin at Fresno State in early October.
"I am very pleased that Betsy Mosher has chosen to accept our offer to join us as the senior member of our administrative team," Boeh said. "She is widely known, admired and respected throughout the intercollegiate athletics industry as a result of her career-long commitment to NCAA compliance, gender equity, sport-program success and all aspects of the student-athlete experience. Given Betsy's extraordinary amount of experience and accomplishment as a Division I senior administrator, she is positioned to provide immediate and strong leadership as we pursue our primary mission to maintain the integrity and national good standing of the Fresno State athletics program."
At Fresno State she will serve as the senior manager of the department under Boeh and possess the role of Senior Woman Administrator (SWA). Mosher will supervise the sports of baseball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, cross country, soccer, men's and women's track and field. She will oversee Fresno State's NCAA and WAC compliance programs, student-athlete services and the athletic training unit.
"There is so much new energy at Fresno State," said Mosher. "I was really impressed with all the people I met, especially the head coaches. Thomas Boeh is a great leader and I really enjoyed my visit with Dr. Welty. I think it will be fun to be a part of a team that pulls it all together. We will be tweaking and not reinventing with simple organizational practices on the internal side of things. I got a great feeling about Fresno State that the student-athletes are placed as the highest of priorities and that's what I'm about."
She comes to Fresno State from the University of Massachusetts, where she has been the Associate Athletics Director for Administration and Compliance Services. While at UMass, she was the campus chair that organized a campus response to a second round NCAA self study, supervised the department's compliance program and was named to the NCAA AEC Cabinet.
"Betsy is a perfect fit for this position," said Jennifer Alley, Executive Director of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA). "She will serve the role well and brings great respect nationally for her integrity and passion for student-athletes."
Prior to UMass, she spent six years as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration and Compliance and SWA at Arizona State. At ASU, her responsibilities included supervision of the department's compliance, academic and student services and outreach to campus, Pac-10 and NCAA. Mosher supervised several sports. She is a past chair of the Pac-10 SWA Committee and served as the departments' liaison to the Office of Civil Rights. In the summer of 2002, she participated in the NACWAA Institute for Athletics Executives.
Mosher was Assistant/Associate Athletics Director for Intercollegiate Services and SWA at Northwestern University from 1989 through 1996. She was a past chair of the Big Ten Women's Administrators Group and Rules and Legislation Committee.
She served as an administrative assistant for legislation at the Big Ten Office from 1988-89 and was a compliance representative at the NCAA from 1986-88.
"Betsy is a proven administrator who I have had the privilege to work with closely in the past," said WAC Commissioner Karl Benson. "She brings instant credibility to Fresno State and will provide the athletics department with great leadership."
Mosher was the softball and women's basketball coach at California University of Pennsylvania from 1980-85. She was the head women's basketball coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater from 1977-79. She earned a degree in Education from Illinois State in 1972, where she was a four-year student-athlete. She earned a Masters degree from Northern Colorado in 1976.
"I'm very excited that Betsy Mosher is joining the Fresno State program," said head basketball coach Steve Cleveland. "Her vast experience at several outstanding institutions will be a big benefit for our department. She has an outstanding understanding of compliance and that expertise and her leadership will be very valuable as we enter a new era at Fresno State."
Ladwig has been named as the Associate Athletics Director for Broadcasting and External Relations. He comes to Fresno State from Ohio University, where he has been Assistant Athletics Director for Creative Services since January. Most recently, his efforts resulted in a record-breaking sellout crowd at Peden Stadium on ESPN in the team's home opening win over Pittsburgh. He was responsible for the key areas of external relations focusing on the game-day experience, marketing and image enhancement of Ohio Athletics, ticket operations and various Bobcat partners.
"By nearly all measures, Paul Ladwig has proven to be a gifted creative director, television producer and administrator," said Boeh. "His impressive experience and productivity both on and off campus has allowed him the opportunity to advance the mission of higher education while remaining on the cutting edge of the marketing, advertising and broadcast entertainment components of the contemporary Division I athletics program."
Ladwig served as the Executive Director for University Communications and Marketing at Ohio University from 2000-2005, where he created new opportunities or promote and enhance the university's message. He directed 20 employees and built a staff of video, web site, satellite and news operations from the ground up. He was the Ohio University Media Services Director from 1996-99. Ladwig taught classes on live and studio television production at Ohio University. He created the Ohio Sports Network and produced the broadcast.
"It's with tremendous pride and excitement that I accept this appointment at Fresno State," said Ladwig. "To be able to further the vision of the Dr. Welty and Thomas Boeh is an opportunity of a life time. Athletics is a window to the world for not only the student-athlete, the athletics department and the university, and it's an honor to come to this university and help advance it to another stage. I can't wait to work with the current staff and develop new and effective ways of telling the Bulldog story in every venue that we have."
In addition to his duties at Ohio, he served as a television producer for ESPN Regional, producing NCAA football and basketball games for Conference USA, Sunbelt, Colonial and Mid-American conferences. He worked for CBS Sports for the 1998 Winter Olympic Games and has won several broadcasting awards.
Ladwig will oversee marketing, the ticket office, the Bulldog Shop, media relations, and Bulldog video services. He will serve as the department liaison to Bulldog Sports Properties. Ladwig will start at Fresno State in early November.
"I have known Paul for about 15 years and think of him in the highest regards," said Woody Freiman, Vice President for Production and Programming of YES (New York Yankees) Network. "He is a can do individual who gets it done right. Paul has demonstrated a remarkable ability to continue to expand the areas he has mastered. His experiences are broad and he uses his varied background to always display unusual leadership and guidance. Paul has taken hold of struggling initiatives and created success after success by inspiring and motivating all those who are part of his team."
