FULLERTON, Calif. - The Fresno State cross country team officially opened its season today at the CS Fullerton Invitational and finished 12th in the women's collegiate 24-team 5K field at Craig Regional Park.
The Bulldogs had eight runners compete as a team and two ran unattached as the course showcased very thick grass and steep short hills.
Junior Andrea Buckner placed 19th among the 319 runners as she posted a time of 19:36.7. Freshman Roxanne Sellick, who captured the women's 2-mile Watermelon Run title a week ago, finished 37th overall with a time of 20:00.3
Junior Zinzi Evans posted a time of 20:37.3, good for 59th overall, while sophomore Marina Santana ran 21:22.9 for a 105th-place showing. Rounding out the top five finishers for the Bulldogs was sophomore Patty Torres, who finished 108th overall (21:30.1).
Rounding out the team for Fresno State was junior Valeria Delgado (128th, 21:54.1), senior Sunny Arada (161st, 22:37.7) and sophomore Nancy Rodriguez (189th, 23:55.5).
Running unattached was freshman Paloma Dominguez (21:34.5) and junior Dina McPhail (22:50.4).
"It was a good season opener for us," Fresno State head coach Joe Gonzales said. "There was a lot of thick grass and it was spongy at times so times might reflect that. Overall, Andrea had a solid opener and Roxanne ran very well. Marina and Patty ran good times, too. We feel pretty good for the first meet of the season. After next week's meet we'll be able to really compare and then go from there."
More than 600 runners participated in the CS Fullerton Invitational as the men's 8K run preceeded the women's race.
Jess Baumgartner (Southern Utah, 25:27.70) and Tiffanie Marley (University of San Diego, 18:26.00) were the individual collegiate winners while Cal Poly Pomona and UCLA took home the team titles for the men and women, respectively.
