Fresno, Calif. - The 2006 Fresno State Baseball team opened their year in solid fashion, beating an alumni team comprised of former Bulldogs by a score of 15-5. Current Major Leaguer Jeff Weaver made the start for the alumni, throwing one inning, and allowing two runs after a two-run home run by Kent Sakamoto.
The 2006 varsity started off quickly against the alumni, as leadoff batter Steve Susdorf reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Kent Sakamoto followed by hitting a long home run off of alumni starter Jeff Weaver to give the Bulldogs the lead. The alumni answered back in the bottom half, however, scoring two runs off of RBI from Brandon Gemoll and Chris Patrick to even the score.
The Bulldogs were able to get one run off of former major leaguer Dennis Springer in two innings of work, but a RBI single from Kyle Wilson again evened the score early. The varsity opened up a big inning in the fourth though, using a single from Christian Vitters and a double from Beau Mills to start a three-run rally against Randy Goodrich, the losing pitcher on the night.
The alumni again answered back in the bottom half of the inning, as Joey Myers opened the fourth with a solo shot to left, and Josh Labandeira came around to score as well, cutting the Bulldog lead down to 6-5. Freshman Justin Wilson came in for the Bulldogs though, and threw two no-hit innings to stop any more alumni rallies.
Fresno State closed the door offensively on the alumni with a three-run sixth inning and a two-run seventh, capped with a Loren Storey inside-the-park home run that got over the head of alumni center fielder Joey Myers' head in the seventh. Three more young Fresno State pitchers saw time, as Holden Sprague, Kris Tomlinson and Jason Breckley all pitched one inning for the Bulldogs to close out the game.
Ranked No. 21 in the country, the Fresno State baseball team opens their season next Friday against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. That game will start at 6 p.m. and will be carried on KMJ 580. The game can also be followed online at www.gobulldogs.com. The home opener for the Bulldogs is on February 10, when the team hosts No. 11 Pepperdine in a three-game series.
