Bulldogs Blank Gauchos 7-0 In Home Opener

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team blanked UC Santa Barbara 7-0, a day after losing to No. 1 Stanford. The Bulldogs arrived in Fresno late Friday night from Palo Alto, Calif., but arose early Saturday morning for the 9 a.m. dual match to defeat the Gauchos. The 46th-ranked Bulldogs improve to 1-1 on the season, while No. 69 Santa Barbara fell to 0-2.
The day began with the Bulldogs sweeping all three doubles matches. Seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter, ranked No. 4 in the country, quickly put away Santa Barbara's Andrea Pintar and Charlotte Scatliffe 8-4. Freshmen Melanie Gloria and Vanessa Heroux, both from Montreal, Canada, followed with an 8-3 victory. In No. 3 doubles, the Gauchos Leslie Damion and Kristen Wilson led freshmen Tinesta Rowe and Magdalena Tokarska 7-3. But the Bulldog duo battled back to score six straight points, winning 9-7. Rowe made some overpowering serves at times, while Tokarska displayed a solid backhand throughout the match.
In singles, Gloria made quick work of Santa Barbara's Chelsea Glynn with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 victory. Gloria improved to 2-0 as a Bulldog. Winterhalter trailed 4-2 in the first set of her match, but soon got back on track to win 6-4, 6-1.
"We played well today for having come back late last night from Stanford," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "I thought we had a good team spirit. So now we've got to get ready for Pepperdine."
In doubles, Sainz and Winterhalter improved to 17-4 on the year. In singles, the five newcomers to the squad are a collective 5-3 after two dual matches. The women's team returns to action Friday, Feb. 10 in Malibu, Calif., to take on Pepperdine at 1:30 p.m. The 'Dogs return home to host Arizona on Feb. 17 and Oklahoma on Feb. 19.
