Bulldogs Win WAC Match Over Aggies

Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State beat conference opponent Utah State in a rematch at the Save Mart Center for its first conference win this Thursday night. The Bulldogs who were 0-5 in the WAC are now 1-5. The Aggies were in fifth place in the WAC standings and now move to 10-11 overall and 3-4 in the WAC.
Junior Angela Wiggins led the way for the Bulldogs, connecting on 21 kills, 14 digs and six blocking assists. Freshman outside hitter Lacey Gera went for 12 kills, two digs and five blocking assists while freshman middle blocker Jamie Temperino landed seven kills on 17 team attacks for a hitting percentage of .412. Senior libero Cassie Gilford added 26 digs.
In game one Utah State took an early lead at 16-7 on a kill by junior outside hitter Amanda Nielson. The Bulldogs responded well coming back from a five point deficit at 28-23 to tie the game up at 28 a piece. Fresno State took a 29-28 lead on a kill by junior outside hitter Alisha McKee. The Bulldogs won game one 30-28 on a ball handling error by the Aggies.
The Aggies would jump out to a 9-4 lead in game two on a kill by Hailey Jeppson. The Bulldogs krept their way back coming within one point at 16-15 on a kill by McKee. Utah State would go on a five point run until the Bulldogs scored the next point at 20-16. Utah State took game two 30-22.
Throughout the match Utah State would gather early leads in each game by five to eight point leads but could not put Fresno State away. Game three was a big match for both squads and in that the Aggies jumped out to a 10-3 lead on a kill by junior outside hitter Beth Hodge. Utah State would keep a steady lead in game three and take the match 30-25.
In game four the Bulldogs would build a hole once again with the score at 19-12. They quickly changed the momentum of the match with a kill by freshman outside hitter Kori Hayes. The Bulldogs were still down by six after Hayes landing a kill but would build a run and take the lead at 23-22 on a kill by Wiggins. Utah State was not able to stop the Bulldogs run in game four and would win 30-25.
The Bulldogs dominated game five and left no doubt taking care of the Aggies. The Bulldogs would build a lead at 8-4 on a kill by Wiggins. Fresno State would go on a 5-2 run with a kill by Temperino and end the match at 15-7.
