Bulldogs Fall Just Short to Wolfpack

Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team lost to third ranked WAC opponent Nevada Saturday night in the Save Mart Center 3-2 (32-34, 30-23, 14-30, 30-20, 16-18). The win was number four in the conference for the Wolfpack as they improve to 11-7 on the season. The Bulldogs won in WAC play Thursday night but are now 1-6.The Bulldogs were lead by junior outside hitter Angela Wiggins on 22 kills and adding 28 assists a piece were junior setter hitter Tiffany Hess and redshirt-freshman setter Lisa Gera.
The Bulldogs came to play in the first game jumping out to a 17-12 lead a kill by Wiggins. Wiggins led the Bulldogs with 22 kills on the night on 56 attempts for a hitting percentage of .250. The Wolfpack ended up tieing the game up at 24 a piece on a kill by junior outside hitter Teal Ericson. Ericson led Nevada with 21 kills. The Bulldogs jumped ahead 30-29 but could not hold on to game one as the Wolfpack put a string of kills together to win 34-32.
In game two the game was tied at 13-13 on a kill by freshman outside hitter Lacey Gera. Fresno State ended up taking a lead at 25-20 on block assists by Gera and Wiggins. Bulldogs won game three 30-23.
Game three was a close battle but Nevada took a lead at 11-10 on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Allison Hernandez. Hernandez tallied 14 kills on 34 attacks for a hitting percentage of .353. The Wolfpack ended up taking a nine point lead at 22-13 and was too much before the Bulldogs could make a comeback. Nevada won game three 30-14.
The Bulldogs knew they had to win game four with the Wolfpack up 2-1 in the match. Freshman middle blocker Jamie Temperino gave Fresno State momentum on a kill leading 11-9. The Bulldogs then went on a six point run until the Wolfpack could score a point. Temperino would connect on another kill at 26-20 and would put the game four out of reach. Fresno State won game four 30-20.
Game five came right down to the wire. Nevada took an 8-4 lead before Fresno State took a timeout. The Bulldogs would tie the game up at 13 a piece. Fresno State had a chance to win the match leading 16-15 but the Wolfpack prevailed on kills from Hernandez, Ericson and junior outside hitter karly Sipherd. Bulldogs lost game five 18-16.
Fresno State will be at home next week on Thursday at 7 p.m. to take on New Mexico State.
