Bulldogs Fight, but Lose 3-2 to Spartans

Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team dropped a five-game decision by scores of 28-30, 23-30 30-16, 30-25 and 13-15 to San Jose State at the Save Mart Center in front of 987 fans Wednesday night.
Fresno State totaled 82 kills in the match on 229 team attacks for a hitting percentage of .223. Junior outside hitter Alisha McKee led the club with 26 kills and right behind her was junior outside hitter Angela Wiggins who finished with 25. Freshman outside hitter Lacey Gera tallied 14. Lisa Gera and junior setter Tiffany Hess contributed heavily in the assist category. Lisa Gera led with 35 and Hess added 34 assists.
In the first game the Bulldogs took the lead at 13-12 on a kill by Lacey Gera. With the game at 26-19 on a kill from Wiggins the Spartans took command and rallied from behind scoring the next nine points. Fresno State would lose the first game 30-28.
Fresno State would jump out to a 10-7 lead in game two on a kill by freshman Jamie Temperino who added eight kills on the night. San Jose State would take back the lead by four at 19-15 on two consecutive kills by junior outside hitter Jennifer Senftleben. The Bulldogs would trail the rest of game two and lose 30-23.
The Bulldogs would come out hot in game three holding a 10-4 lead on two consecutive errors by the Spartans. Fresno State would build a bigger lead by eight at 16-8 on a kill by McKee. The Bulldogs poured it on in game three tallying 19 kills on a hitting percentage of .375 compared to San Jose State who hit -.061. Fresno State would win game three 30-16.
In game four Fresno State would gain a four point lead at 11-7 on a kill by McKee before San Jose State would take a timeout. The Bulldogs built a six point lead at 18-12 on a kill by Wiggins. San Jose State would cut the lead to two at 24-22 on a kill by sophomore middle blocker Colleen Burke and an attack error on the Bulldogs. With the score at 27-25 San Jose State would lose game four on three consecutive attacking errors.
San Jose State would come out to a 7-3 lead but Fresno State fought back and tied it up at eight a piece on a kill by Mckee. The Spartans took a 12-10 lead on a Bulldog service error and a kill by Seftleben. Fresno State would tied the game up again at 13 a piece on a kill by Lacey Gera. San Jose State would go on to win by two on a kill by Senftleben and an attacking error by the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs (4-17, 2-8) will travel to Cal State Northridge (12-7, 5-3) this weekend to play in the Matadome on Saturday at 7 p.m.
