Bulldogs Lose WAC Match to Vandals

Moscow, Idaho - The Fresno State Bulldogs volleyball team lost to the Idaho Vandals by scores of 30-25, 30-25 and 30-22 at Memorial Gym Thursday, giving them its third WAC loss of the season.
Junior outside hitter Alisha McKee led the way for the `Dogs connecting on nine kills. Freshman outside hitter Lacey Gera landed the next highest with seven kills. Senior libero Cheryl Selenak posted 14 digs.
A 10-6 Idaho run early in the first game put the Vandals out front. Fresno State answered with points of its own by connecting on a kill by junior outside hitter Angela Wiggins and a solo block by Lacey Gera to put the Bulldogs within two at 10-8.The Vandals went on a run with the Bulldogs trailing by eight at 20-12. The Bulldogs surged a late lead and cut it to six at 24-18 on a block by Wiggins. Idaho ran with game one to 29-20 but Fresno State made a late scare cutting it to four at 29-25 on five consecutive points. Idaho won game one 30-25.
In game two the Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-4 lead on a kill by Lacey Gera. Idaho tied the game up at 7-7 on a kill by sophomore setter Kelsey James. The Bulldogs and Vandals traded leads early in game two but Idaho eventually took the lead at 11-10 on a Fresno State hitting error. The Vandals were running with game two and building momentum at 19-11 on a tip by senior middle blocker Erin Curtis. Idaho put the lead at 26-15 on kill by sophomore outside hitter Lauren Mathis. The Bulldogs cut it four at 29-25 on a surprise kill by freshman setter Lisa Gera. Vandals took game two 30-25.
In game three the Bulldogs held right with the Vandals in the beginning at 4-4 on a kill by senior outside hitter Alison Pitton. Fresno State took the lead at 8-7 on a freshman middle blocker Kelly Leonardo kill. McKee put the Bulldogs within four at 16-12 on her second block of the night. Game three was much of the same story as the first two with the Vandals jumping out to six and seven point leads after the game reached double digits. The Vandals put the game at a eight point lead on two consecutive blocks but Wiggins answered back on a kill at 23-16. Fresno State cut the lead to four at 23-19 on a Lacey Gera kill. Bulldogs cut the lead to three at 25-22 on a hitting error by the Vandals. Idaho put the game out of reach at 28-22 on a kill by senior outside hitter Amanda Bowman. Idaho won game three 30-22.
Fresno State will play its next conference match on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Boise State. The Bulldogs lead the series 12-2 but Boise State won the last match 3-1.
