FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's cross country team captured the San Francisco State Invitational, Saturday morning at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. It was the second title of the season for the women. The men finished sixth in the 8K race.
"Our freshmen really ran well today," said head coach Joe Gonzales. "It's been a while since someone from the team beat Zinzi Evans, so it was good to see Marissa McPhail run well today."
McPhail, a freshman, ran a personal-best 23:07 in the 6K run, finishing second overall. Elizabeth Noey of San Francisco was the champion. Fresno State senior, Zinzi Evans, finished right behind McPhail in third place with a time of 23:23. Freshman Jennifer Hernandez helped the 'Dogs finish with three women in the top-10, taking tenth place with a time of 23:48.
The Bulldogs scored 48 points as all five runners finished in the top-20. Second place San Francisco tallied 58 points. McPhail's 23:07 is now 10th all-time in Fresno State women's 6K races.
The men finished sixth out of seven teams, scoring 129 points. Freshman Brandon Geis finished 36th overall and 19th among collegiate participants with a time of 27:19.
Next week, both teams will head to the Cal Poly Invitational where the women will run a 5K and the men a 8K race.
