Bulldogs Open the Season with Fresno State Tournament
The Bulldogs open the 2006-07 season by hosting a tournament, the Fresno State Invitational, Nov. 10-12, at the Save Mart Center. The tournament is a round robin format that features UC Irvine, South Alabama and Winston-Salem State. The Dogs open the season with Winston-Salem State on Friday at 8 p.m. There will be two games per day for the three days of the event.
Ticket Mini-Plans Available for 2006-07 Season
With high expectations for the 2006-07 Bulldog basketball seasons, fans will be able to take advantage of unprecedented ticket options for the Fresno State men's and women's basketball seasons. The Fresno State athletics department introduced four different mini-plans for the upcoming season. Three, five, seven and 10-game packages will be offered. Dogs Sweep Exhibitions
Fresno State prepared for the season with a couple of exhibition games last week. The Dogs beat Cal State Los Angeles 91-59 and Fresno Pacific 63-54. Both games were played at the Save Mart Center. The records and statistics from exhibition games do not count toward 2006-07 season totals.
Fresno State Tournament Field
Winston-Salem State: The Rams are coming off a 19-10 season in which they finished second in the CIAA with a 10-6 record. Jamal Durham is the top returning scorer at 9.7 points per game. First-year coach Bobby Collins has a 67-57 record in four seasons as a head coach. This is the first meeting between the Dogs and the Rams.
South Alabama: Former Kentucky player John Pelphrey enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Jaguars, who were 24-7 last season, 12-3 in the Sun Belt, and advanced to the first round of the NCAA tournament. South Alabama, a school of 13,500 students, is located in in Mobile, Ala. Demetric Bennett, a junior guard, is the top returning scorer for the Jags at 8.8 points per game.
UC Irvine: The Anteaters are making their first appearance in Fresno since 1992, an 82- 55 win for the Dogs. Fresno State owns a 25-8 lead in the series, having won five of the last six games. Pat Douglass is in his 10th season at Irvine and guided the squad to a 16-13 record and second place finish in the Big West Conference last season. Senior forward Nic Campbell averaged 10.5 ppg last season.
O'Neil to Redshirt
Fresno State junior Dwight O'Neil will redshirt this season according to head coach Steve Cleveland. O'Neil has two years of eligibility remaining. For his career, he is averaging 7.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
