FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team captured the title of the Diablo Grande Invitational on Tuesday after shooting rounds of 308-303-297 - 908 and placing three Bulldogs in the top 15.
Senior Jonny Rosa (77-72-76) led Fresno State's scores overall, placing fourth with a 225 total. Senior Brian Kelley (75-80-72) birdied three of the last four holes to shoot a final-round 72 and come in eighth with 227. Freshman Matt Shaw (T15th) shot rounds of 79-77-74 - 230.
"I give Jonny credit for hanging in there and playing some good golf," head coach Mike Watney said. "Brian's play today was a huge contribution. Matt is a tough freshman who we are going to see some good things from down the road."
Junior Gunnar Avinelis (233), playing through injury, placed 17th after shooting rounds of 77-81-75.
"Gunnar's injury made it difficult for him to finish today's round, but he still did anyway," Watney said. "He even made three 10-foot putts to help contribute to Fresno State's team score."
Senior Ryan McDonald (83-74-82 - 239) placed 26th, and individual Nick McClintock (79-85-82) tied for 35th with 246.
"With all the weather conditions the team endured - the freezing cold, wind and rain - I am so proud we pulled through for the win," Watney said. "This tournament was a great display of perseverance on everyone's part."
Fresno State next competes in the Arizona National Invitational Tournament March 26-28 in Tucson, Ariz.
