FRESNO, Calif. - Jason Anthony and Brian Kelley both finished in the top 20 Tuesday at Arizona's National Invitational Tournament to lead Fresno State in its most challenging tournament yet of the season.
Anthony (67-73-72), who was the top `Dog through all three days, ended in a tie for seventh with an overall 4-under 212. He birdied holes 14, 15 and 16 to shoot a final-round 72.
"Jason was playing with an All-American from UNLV, really in a position he's not too familiar with," head coach Mike Watney said. "He still managed to get a top-10 finish in a stellar field."
Kelley's 1-under 215 total, good for a 16th-place finish, is his best overall score on the year. He shot rounds of 70-73-72.
"Top 20 is really an accomplishment here," Watney said. "It was definitely a strong field at this tournament, which meant great finishes for Jason and BK."
Fresno State (289-297-295 - 881) finished 14th.
Matt Shaw (T71st) improved each day to register 227 with rounds of 78-76-73.
"Matt had an excellent round today shooting 1-over," Watney said. "He's a freshman, but really getting used to playing out here. He hit it very good today."
Ryan McDonald (76-77-78) and Jonny Rosa (76-75-80) both tied for 78th with 231 totals.
The Omni Tucson National Golf Course will play host to another tournament in May, the NCAA West Regionals.
"We want to be back here playing in the West Regional," Watney said. "We had some good practice at this tournament."
Fresno State next competes in the Morris Williams Invitational April 3-4 in Austin, Texas.
