COLLEGE STATION, Texas. - The 39th-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team beat No. 31 Texas A&M 4-3 Saturday in College Station, Texas. The Bulldogs bounced back in a big way from a 7-0 loss at Baylor by handing the Aggies their first home loss of the season in front of 300 fans. It is the second time in two weeks the Bulldogs have beaten a higher ranked team. Fresno State improves its record to 6-4, while Texas A&M fell to 5-5.
"It was a really good win for us," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "The ladies came back from a tough loss and beat a pretty good Texas A&M team."
The Bulldogs began the match well, winning the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 slots. Seniors Katharina Winterhalter and Lucia Sainz topped Anna Blagodarova and Sarah Foster 8-4, while freshman Melanie Gloria and sophomore Jacqueline Haskett beat Clifford and Iwinski, 8-3.
Gloria, Winterhalter and freshman Tinesta Rowe all won in singles. Gloria's straight set victory over No. 67 Anna Lubinsky clinched the win for Fresno State.
Fresno State now heads to Fort Worth, Texas, for a crucial matchup with No. 13 TCU tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 5, at 10 a.m. PT.
