Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State's win streak finally came to an end in a 9-8 loss Sunday against the Aggies. Fresno State began the game with their third straight quick start, scoring three runs in the first inning, but the New Mexico State offense carried the day, scoring nine runs on twelve hits to outlast the Bulldogs. Sophomore Ozzie Lewis was 2-4 with a grand slam.
The Bulldogs grabbed the lead in the first inning for the third day in a row, coming out for a quick start against New Mexico State starter Jason Conner. Steve Susdorf started the game with a single to left center, and after Loren Storey walked a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position for the Bulldogs. A Kent Sakamoto sacrifice fly brought the first run across, and after Christian Vitters, the Bulldogs scored another run on a delayed double steal. A single from Brian Lapin put the Bulldogs ahead early 3-0.
Two opening walks put the Aggies in position for a big inning, and both runners came across as New Mexico State began to put runs on the board. A solo home run from Joey Vincent tied the game in the second inning, and after a double from Joseph Godinez, an RBI single from Jason Long put New Mexico State ahead 4-3.
In the next three innings, the scoring from the Aggies continued as New Mexico State put one run across in the third and fourth innings before a double and two walks loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth. Joseph Godinez then added his second hit of the game, sending a flare into the outfield to score two runs, putting the Aggies ahead 8-3.
Fresno State made up most of the deficit in the sixth inning however, taking advantage of a leadoff walk with the heart of the order up. A walk to Sakamoto started the inning, and after Beau Mills continued the inning with a double, a Christian Vitters walk loaded the bases, and Ozzie Lewis cleared them with a grand slam, his second home run of the week and of his career.
The Bulldogs battled all the way back in the eighth, as Christian Vitters matched Lewis with his second home run of the week, a solo shot to right to even the score at eight to begin the eighth inning. Reliever Beto Romo was able make it through the rest of the inning unscathed, leaving the teams knotted at eight through the Bulldogs' half.
New Mexico State retook the lead in the bottom half of the frame, as Vince Rodden singled to start the inning, and after moving over two bases on two groundouts, scored on a Adam Harvey's third double of the day, putting the Aggies ahead 9-8. Romo worked through the rest of the ninth to pick up his second win of the season.
Fresno State returns home next week for a three-game series against Hawai'i beginning at 6:35 on Friday night.
