Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State's four-game non-conference series with Dallas Baptist did not get off to the start that the Bulldogs wanted as the Patriots pounded out 10 runs on 12 hits on the way to the win in game one. Beau Mills was the bright spot for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-3 on the night.
Brandon Burke made his fourth start of the season on Thursday, and while the sophomore has pitched well of late, he struggled against an offense that entered the game batting .316. Austin Krum started off the game with a single through the right side, a deep single to center from Cody Montgomery put two runners on. The Bulldogs retired two batters, but another single to center from Matt Tucker brought two home to give Dallas Baptist an early 2-0 lead.
The Patriots put up three more runs in the second, as Damian Gomez started a rally with a one-out double. That was followed by a hit batter by Burke, and a single from Krum loaded the bases. A double from Montgomery brought two runs home, and a fielder's choice to shortstop brought home a third run in the inning.
Fresno State started to make their way back in the third inning. Beau Mills got his first hit of the night to lead off the inning. Dallas Baptist retired two batters, but Brian Lapin beat out a close play at first base on a grounder, and a double to the gap from Ryan Overland brought home two runs, cutting the lead back to 5-2.
More runs would follow in the third, as a leadoff walk came to haunt the Bulldogs. Israel Victor singled up the middle to put on another runner, and Gomez brought them all home with a three-run home run just fair of the left-field line to move ahead 8-2. A two-run home run from Drew Holder in the fourth inning dealt all of the damage Dallas Baptist would need.
Michael Gardner picked up the win for the Patriots, his third of the season. Game two of four is scheduled for tomorrow, as the Bulldogs look to even the series tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
