
No. 21 Fresno State Tops Cal Poly, 5-2

FRESNO, Calif. - The 21st-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team won the doubles point and four of six singles matches on its way to a 5-2 victory over Cal Poly, Thursday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center. Freshman Melanie Gloria, ranked 21st in the NCAA, won the deciding match with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Cal Poly's Samantha Waller. Fresno State improved to 11-6 on the season, while Cal Poly fell to 11-7.
The Bulldogs began the match with three solid wins in doubles. Sixth-ranked Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter beat Carol Erickson and Waller 8-3, increasing their overall record to 29-7 and 13-4 in dual matches. Gloria and sophomore Jacqueline Haskett entered the national doubles rankings this week and No. 51 and delivered a dominating 8-1 win over Shannon Brady and Amanda Varela.
In singles, Erickson defeated Sainz to knot team scores at one each. But freshman Magdalena Tokarska, Haskett, Gloria and Winterhalter followed with singles victories to give Fresno State its fifth win in the last six matches. Winterhalter has won six straight in singles to improve her dual match record to 12-5.
The Bulldogs play Nevada later this evening in the second match of a doubleheader. The match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Wathen Tennis Center.
