FRESNO, Calif. - In a match that could have been much closer than the final score indicated, the 21st-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team defeated the Sacramento State Hornets 7-0, Saturday afternoon in Sacramento, Calif. The win was Fresno State's fifth consecutive and seventh in its last eight matches. Four women won in three sets, while senior Katharina Winterhalter and sophomore Jacqueline Haskett both won in straight sets. The Bulldogs improved to 13-6 on the year while Sacramento State fell to 12-5.
"It was a tough 7-0 win," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "We really competed hard and even though we weren't playing our best today, everyone found a way to win. That's what the good teams do to win. Sacramento State always plays us tough and we responded well."
The Bulldogs dominated in doubles, winning on all three courts. Haskett and freshman Melanie Gloria improved to 13-1 as a tandem, Helland and Pimenova 8-3.
In singles, Winterhalter won her 99th career match (No. 3 all-time), passing former Bulldog Shanna Peete in the school record books. She won her eighth straight, improving to 21-8 overall and 14-5 in dual matches.
Senior Lucia Sainz and Bruna Paes both lost their first sets in singles, but battled back to win at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively. Gloria and freshman Magdalena Tokarska solidified Fresno State's win with victories in singles as well.
The Bulldogs host Loyola Marymount on Sunday, April 9, at 11 a.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center.
