FRESNO, Calif. - The women's golf team held its end of the year awards banquet Sunday night at Pardini's where it celebrated the 2005-06 season and recognized four student-athletes.
Sophomore Laura Luethke was named the team's Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row. Luethke had the second-best scoring average in the Western Athletic Conference all season long and took home one tournament title this year from the Spartan Invitational.
"Laura continued to carry our team with grace and dignity during what many called a slump," said head coach Angie Cates. "No doubt it was a roller coaster year for her, but she stayed the course and always carried her head high."
Senior Adrianna Chico was given the Bulldog Award, an honor reserved for the player who has the best attitude. Chico, who earned a 4.0 GPA this fall, regularly competed in Fresno State's lineup throughout her two years on the team. She also served as a co-captain this season.
"Adrianna doesn't complain about things. She just does what needs to be done, and does it with a positive attitude," said Cates.
Freshman Jennifer Shipley was awarded Top Dog for exemplifying what it means to be a student-athlete. Shipley emerged as the team's No. 2 golfer and was among the WAC's best in scoring average.
"Jennifer earned a 3.8 GPA in her first semester of college and wasn't happy with it," said Cates. "She did this while qualifying for every tournament and contributing her score every time."
Junior Brittany Cooley, who played in one fall tournament and five spring tournaments, was named the Most Improved Player. She improved her scoring average by three shots from the fall to the spring, and her scores were used 63 percent of the time.
"Not only have Brittany's numbers improved, but she has made tremendous progress with the mental side of this game," said Cates.
Fresno State completed its season with a third-place finish at the WAC Championship in April.
