Fresno, Calif. - Senior goaltender Angie Larsen recorded her first shutout of the season, and Cortney Sobero and Andrea Salvador both chipped in a goal as the Bulldogs won their season opener 2-0 against the Dons. Fresno State scored a goal in each half, and turned back 10 second period shots as Larsen made seven saves to preserve the win.
In what was the season opener for both clubs, Fresno State and San Francisco played evenly through the first 20 minutes, only taking one shot per team and mainly playing in the middle of the field. San Francisco had some early opportunities with three corner kicks in the first half, but Fresno State was the team to convert first as a shot from Alison Sill bounced forward from Dons goalkeeper Kelly Pohle and Andrea Salvador put the rebound home top shelf to move the Bulldogs ahead 1-0.
Salvador put one more shot on goal in her 15 minutes of play in the first half, taking advantage of some fresh legs off of the bench in a game that saw 17 Bulldog players record significant time. Angie Larsen made her first save of the game as the period wound down, grabbing hold of a shot from Jenny Jarvie.
San Francisco would put more pressure on the Bulldogs in the second half, taking the first shot of the period in the 49th minute as well as the first corner kick. The Dons continued to make chances by moving the ball to forward Fiona O'Sullivan who had seven shots on the night, but continued to be turned back by a stout Fresno State defense.
The best scoring opportunity for San Francisco came in the 74th minute, as a cross met the foot of O'Sullivan, putting the ball into the crossbar, but a second shot was corralled by Larsen to stop the opportunity for the Dons.
Fresno State quickly responded to put the game out of reach, as a cross from Yvette Flores was dropped back into the center by Christina Gilbert to the Bulldogs' top goal scorer Cortney Sobrero, who sent home her first goal of the year to move the `Dogs ahead 2-0. A final opportunity was turned back as Andrea Salvador's third shot of the evening was nearly a second goal, stopped only by an outstanding diving block by San Francisco goaltender Kelly Pohle.
The Bulldogs will have one day to rest, and then will return to Bulldog Stadium as the team hosts Cal State Northridge on Sunday, August 27. Kickoff for that matchup is scheduled for 2 p.m.
