Gainsville, Fla. - Senior Cortney Sobrero put the Bulldogs' first shot on goal into the net and the Fresno State defense held strong as Fresno State won their third consecutive game 1-0 at Florida on Friday. Fresno State has now not allowed a goal in three games this season.
Florida came out with the early offense, taking three shots against Fresno State goaltender Angie Larsen, but she was up to the challenge by recording three saves, while Fresno State took one shot early that went high over the goal from Christina Gilbert.
The Bulldogs' went to their top scorer in the 16th minute, and it paid off as Cortney Sobrero scored her second goal of the season, knocking a shot off of a defender and into the net from 20 yards to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0.
Florida would continue to have the advantage in shots, as Cortney Sobrero tried two more times in the first half but was unable to find the goal, and in the second half, Fresno State focused on holding their lead, as the Gators took 10 shots while the Bulldogs had none.
Larsen continued to hold strong in the net, however, turning back four shots in the second half as the Bulldogs picked up the upset win over No. 18 Florida. The shutout was the third in a row for Larsen on seven saves, and the Bulldogs overall have held opponents scoreless for three straight games to start out the year.
Fresno State continues their trip through the Sunshine State, moving to Orlando to face Central Florida on Sunday, Sept. 3. Kickoff for that game is 10 a.m. local time.
