FRESNO, Calif. - Alison Sill and Antonea Lugo each scored their first goals of the season in Fresno State's 2-0 defeat of Portland State, Friday evening at Bulldog Stadium. The 23rd-ranked Bulldogs improved to 5-1-1 on the year, while Portland State fell to 0-6-1.
Sill got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard early when she scored from 15 yards out at 48:42. It was her first goal of the season. Lugo added an insurance goal late in the second half after a beautiful cross from senior Cortney Sobrero.
The Bulldogs controlled the tempo completely in the second half.
"We played a lot better in the second half," said head coach Steve Springthorpe. "We started to put more pressure on Portland State's defense and I really thought we increased our energy."
The first half provided plenty of drama. Senior forward Cortney Sobrero nearly scored from about 15 yards on the wing. Sophomore forward Alison Sill's header went just above the crossbar following junior defender Andrea Alires' corner kick.
With four minutes left in the first, Portland State threatened on the counter attack, but midfielder Marianna Palermo's shot went just wide. Fresno State goalkeeper Angie Larsen made her first save of the match off Salina Karia's header early in the first period.
The Bulldogs will be back in action this Sunday, September 17, at 2 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium. Get your tickets today at the Fresno State ticket office or online at gobulldogs.com.
