SACRAMENTO, Calif. - After an idle week, the Fresno State cross country teams were back at it this morning when they competed at the Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree at Granite Regional Park.
Missing out on a second place finish by one point, the women placed third as three Bulldogs placed among the top 15 runners and four posted sub 20-minute 5,000-meter performances.
Senior Zinzi Evans (Oakland, Calif.), sophomore Roxanne Sellick (Fresno, Calif.) and freshman Marissa McPhail (Crotton, Md.) were the top three finishers for the women's squad.
Evans, who has finished first for the Bulldogs in the second straight race of the season, clocked her fifth-fastest career 5K time of 19:13 to place eighth overall.
Sellick, who has finished second for the 'Dogs in both meets this year, posted her second-fastest 5K time of 19:15 -- 13 seconds off her career-best mark -- for a ninth place showing (she ran a 19:02.1 at the 2005 Western Athletic Conference Championship).
McPhail, who made her collegiate debut at the CS Stanislaus Invitational on Sept. 2 and finished fourth for Fresno State, crossed the finish line third for the Bulldogs when she notched a 5K time of 19:25.
Junior Patty Torres (Porterville, Calif.) has posted back-to-back career-best performances this season. After clocking a personal-best 6K mark at the CS Stanislaus Invitational to open the year, she notched a career-best 5K time of 19:58 today for her first sub-20 minute performance.
Freshman Meri Hawkins (Royal Oaks, Calif.) and junior Marina Santana (Woodland Hills, Calif.) round out the top 25 in the women's meet. Hawkins finished 22nd with a time of 20:11 while Santana, who persevered through an ankle injury, posted her sixth-fastest 5K time of 20:18 for a 25th place showing.
Sophomore Paloma Dominguez (Corcoran, Calif.) also clocked a personal-best 5K time today with a 20:33 for a 29th place finish. Rounding out the field for Fresno State were freshmen Jocelyn Oviedo (Mission Hills, Calif.), who finished 37th (21:16), and Sasha Souder (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), who placed 39th (21:37).
On the men's side, the Bulldogs started out with five runners but had to take a non-team score when one could not finish the race due to injury.
Two 'Dogs did make their collegiate debut this morning as freshmen Frank Sanders (Ceres, Calif.) and Tony Rojas, Jr. (McFarland, Calif.) officially toed the line.
Finishing first for Fresno State was freshman Brandon Geis (Fresno, Calif.), who improved his 8K time by eight seconds after finishing 27th with a time of 27:10. In the season opener at the CS Stanislaus Invitational, he ran an 8K time of 27:18 to finish second for the Bulldogs.
Sanders placed 30th overall with a time of 27:15 while sophomore Allan Williamson (Fresno, Calif.) finished 35th (27:59) and Rojas placed 38th (28:29).
"The team did real well after a hard week of practice," Fresno State head coach Joe Gonzales said. "We were idle last week and took advantage of hard training to get ourselves in the best position we can come conference time. The men had a difficult challenge in running against No. 11 BYU but to watch them place ahead of runners they knew from high school was very encouraging. To see improvements made on tired legs on such a tough course today is a real credit to everyone."
Fresno State is idle next week. The Bulldogs will compete next at the Stanford Invitational, which will be held in the evening on Sat., Sept. 30.
