Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State stayed even with their opponent through regulation for the second straight contest, but again fell on the short end of the draw as the Bulldogs lost to Cal Poly 1-0 on Sunday. Junior Erica Ledger scored the winning goal for the Mustangs in the 97th minute.
While being outshot by the Mustangs 10-6, Fresno State held the edge in corner kicks 6-4 including four in the second half. However, Angie Larsen turned away three shots in the latter period as the Bulldogs kept the game scoreless in the second half.
Fresno State's best scoring opportunity also came in the second half, as Cal Poly goaltender came out to try for a ball in the box but didn't reach the play. Instead, Bulldog midfielder Antonea Lugo was able to put a foot on the ball, sending it toward the open net but Mustang defender Heidi McQuitty cleared the ball to save the goal.
The winning goal for Cal Poly came seven minutes into the first overtime period. Sophomore Ashley Vallis took a shot that was saved by Fresno State goaltender Angie Larsen, but the rebound found Ledger who scored the game-winning goal with three minutes left in the first overtime frame.
Fresno State returns to Bulldog Stadium for their next contest, opening Western Athletic Conference play against Nevada on Oct. 6. That match begins at 7 p.m., and is the first of seven conference games for the Bulldogs this season.
