Bulldogs Compete With No. 15 Hawai'i

Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State faced its third conference opponent and lost in a close competition to No. 15 Hawai'i in three games (23-30,22-30,23-30). The Bulldogs improved in most categories and played fundamentally sound since the last match against the Rainbow Wahine Sept. 23 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Fresno State connected on 39 kills and eight service aces. Junior setter Tiffany Hess led the Bulldogs with 17 assists and senior libero Cheryl Selenak added 11 digs.
In game one the Bulldogs grabbed the lead at 9-8 on junior outside hitter Angela Wiggins kill on a pass from Hess. Fresno State stayed with Hawai'i throughout the game and seemed to gain confidence. Hawai'i jumped ahead 20-15 on a kill by senior outside hitter Sarah Mason. Fresno State fought its way back at 23-22 on a Selenak service ace. The Rainbow Wahine put a run together to cap off game one 30-23.
In game two Hawai'i jumped out to a 5-0 lead until redshirt-freshman outside hitter Nicole Sandino connected on a kill. The Rainbow Wahine controlled game two from the beginning and led through the end. Mason put game two away at 24-17 when she landed a kill from a pass by senior setter Kanoe Kamana'o. Kamana'o led the Rainbow Wahine with 45 assists in the match.
Hawai'i grabbed a 10-6 lead on a kill from freshman middle blocker Amber Kaufman. Fresno State surged to make a comeback on a redshirt-freshman outside hitter Lacey Gera kill. Gera landed seven kills on the match. Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Keefe put game three out of reach at 24-19 with a kill. Hawai'i won game three 30-23.
The Bulldogs take the road next week against two conference opponents at Idaho and Boise State. On Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. Fresno State will take on Idaho. On Oct. 7 at 1:00 p.m. the Bulldogs will face Boise State.
