Denver, Colo. - Fresno State junior forward Dominic McGuire was named the Western Athletic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week for December 25-31, announced by the conference Tuesday morning.
McGuire, from San Diego, recorded a triple-double Saturday in a 68-65 victory over San Diego. McGuire didn't have a conventional triple-double, he recorded 14 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots in the victory.
"That was a very impressive accomplishment by Dom Saturday night," Fresno State head coach Steve Cleveland said. "You don't see a triple-double with 10 blocked shots very often."
It was the first triple-double for Fresno State since 1994 and the first ever points, rebounds, blocked shots triple-double in school history. McGuire helped the Bulldogs finish non-conference play 11-2 and snapped San Diego's seven-game winning streak.
McGuire became only the third player in school history to record a triple-double, with Dave Barnett recorded two in 1991 and Brian Santiago recorded one in 1994. McGuire's 10 blocks was also second in the record books, falling one short of the all-time mark of 11. McGuire was also the first player in the WAC to record a triple-double since Rice's Jason McKrieth recorded one in 2004.
The 6-8 forward earned his second career WAC Player of the Week award in his first season in a Fresno State uniform. McGuire won this year's first honor after the first week of the season. The honor was also the third WAC Player of the Week award for Fresno State this season. Hector Hernandez won the other award.
