Women Third, Men Fifth at Cal Poly Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Roxanne Sellick had been sick for the past two days and wasn't sure how well she would perform on Saturday at the Cal Poly Invitational. But the Fresno native came out strong and finished ninth overall with a time of 18:17 during the 5K race. Sellick led the team to a third place finish, but the Bulldogs were second among participating collegiate squads.
"The women ran very well today," head coach Joe Gonzales said. "There were a lot of personal records today on this course."
Sellick ran a 19:31 last year on the Cal Poly course, improving her time by more than a minue. Senior Meredith Hawkins and sophomore Marissa McPhail also posted personal-best times for the course. Hawkins finished 13th with a time of 13:33 and McPhail placed 14th while clocking n at 18:39.
Junior Briana Cleary followed in 23rd (19:07) and sophomore Jennifer Hernandez placed 29th with a time of 19:26.
On the men's side, freshman Erick Garcia was Fresno State's top finisher again, leading the 'Dogs to a fifth place finish. He placed 18th with a time of 27:17 in his first 8K race at Cal Poly.
Sophomore Franke Sanders, who ran at time of 28:51 in 2006 at the course, placed 23rd on Saturday with a time of 27:43, more than a minute faster than last season.
Freshman Elijah Carillo took 27th (28:11), sophomore James McCurley took 38th (28:50) and senior David Vartanian was 42nd (29:03).
Both teams will now prepare for the WAC Championships on Oct. 27 in Logan, Utah.
