Rasmussen Leads with 10 Kills Against Spartans

SAN JOSE, Calif. - In their first meeting of the year, the San Jose State Spartans defeated Fresno State, 3-0, in the Western Athletic Conference match for sixth place Monday night (Oct. 22) in San Jose, Calif. The game scores were: 27-30, 19-30 and 26-30.
In a tight game one, the Bulldogs took the largest lead of the match at that point at 16-10 behind the serving of senior setter Tiffany Hess. It was a 6-0 run for the Bulldogs which included a service ace by Hess.
The Spartans then went on to score seven consecutive points of their own to re-take the lead at 16-17. A kill by Tairyn Rasmussen tied the game at 17. Points continued to rally as there were 11 ties and six lead changes in game one. San Jose State took the lead for good at 20-21.
Tairyn Rasmussen led the Bulldogs with five kills in game one. The Bulldogs hit .182 as a team.
Down 1-6 in game two, the Bulldogs fought back behind the serving of freshman Kelly Mason to tie it at 6-6. San Jose State then scored the next two points to take the lead at 6-8 and the Bulldogs fell to 0-2 in the match heading into the locker room.
Game three saw the Bulldogs take an early lead, but it was much as the same as game one with 8 ties. San Jose State took the lead at 12-13 and went on a 3-7 run to push the lead to 15-20. The Bulldogs got back to within one at 25-26, but the Spartans took the match with an attack error by Fresno State.
Rasmussen led the Bulldogs for the second-straight match with 10 kills. Kasey Van Grouw had 17 assists to lead the team and Lisa Gera had 19 digs.
San Jose State hit .286 for the match and was led by Jennifer Senftleben with 20 kills.
With the loss, Fresno State falls to 3-8 in the WAC and to seventh place in the standings. The Bulldogs are now 5-17 overall. San Jose State takes sole possession of sixth place in the conference standings at 4-7 and has a 10-12 overall record.
The Spartans have now won the last three meetings between the two teams. Fresno State last beat San Jose State in five in Fresno on November 10, 2005.
Fresno State travels to Bakersfield as they play the Roadrunners for the second time in a week. Cal State Bakersfield defeated the Bulldogs in four last week in Fresno.
