FRESNO, Calif. - With the blazing fires and ferocious wind in southern California, the Bulldogs still managed a fifth place finish after two rounds at the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational in El Cajon, Calif. With winds predicted to be going 30-40 mph, some seemed to have hit 60 mph. Both rounds were completed with Fresno State scoring two rounds of 305 to finish with a 34-over 610 to stay in the top-five of the 17-team field.
"There was huge fierce wind today," said Mike Watney. "This is one of the most difficult days to play golf I have ever seen. I have never seen the wind go from zero to 40 and back down to 20. That is why the scores are high in a situation when they really shouldn't have been."
The host team San Diego State finished with 18-over 594 ahead of Wichita State's 600. Missouri shot 602 for third and UC Riverside shot a 30-over 606.
The Bulldogs are once again led by sophomore Todd Angel with 5-over par to tie for tenth place. Angel shot a second round of 73 to move up on the leaderboard. Grant Doverspike is tied for 27th place with 9-over 153. Matt Ryan is tied for 46th place at 11-over par and Brad Wyatt is tied for 54th place at 12-over. Matt Shaw is tied for 87th with a two round total of 164. Michael Gideon and Chris Arnold both participated in the tournament as individuals and both finished tied for 63rd place at 13-over 157.
Nick Perez of UC Riverside and Jerry Porras of San Diego State are tied for first at even par.
The third and final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. For live scoring go to gobulldogs.com.
