Ryan Starts Strong at Lexus Classic

The Fresno State men's golf team hosted the first round of the 45th Annual Fresno Lexus Classic at Fort Washington Country Club. The Bulldogs shot 295-293 - 588 in the first 36 holes on Monday to place in 16th place out of the 20-team field. The Bulldogs will tee off of the tenth hole beginning at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday morning.
San Diego State fired a first round 275 to jump in the lead early and finished the day with a 277 to finish with 24-under 552. The Aztecs never fell from the top in the first day of competition. Texas posted a second round 276 to finish the day 18-under, six strokes from the leader. Cal (565) is in third with 11-under and TCU (570) in fourth. Oregon rounds out the top five with 5-under 571.
"Matt Ryan had a pretty good day," said head coach Mike Watney. "Otherwise it was a struggle for the Bulldogs. Tomorrow is a new day and I hope to pass four or five teams."
The Fresno State leader was Matt Ryan with 2-under 142. Ryan was in a tie for the lead after having a low round of 67 in the first round. The second round Ryan shot a 75 to tie for 21st place at the end of the first day.
"I had a good first round," said junior Matt Ryan. "I had a lot of birdies and a solid back nine. I'm starting to feel like my old self again. I could have shot a 29 but I missed two close putts. My second round was a struggle so I just need to get off to an early start tomorrow."
Brad Wyatt and Michael Gideon tied for 65th place with 4-over 148. Wyatt improved his first round 76 with a 72 in the second round. Gideon also improved his first round 75 with a 73. Todd Angel shot 79-73 - 152 to tie for 82nd place and Mark Pryor tied for 87th place with 77-76 - 153.
Individuals Chris Arnold and Dean Tonneslan played solid as individuals for the Bulldogs. Arnold tied for 56th place with 77-70 - 147 and Tonneslan tied for 73rd with 72-77 - 149.
The individual leader is Issei Suenaga who is playing as an individual for Long Beach State. Suenaga fired two rounds of 67, having the low round in both the first and second round. David Palm of San Diego State is two strokes behind with 136.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" The third and final round of the Fresno Lexus Golf Classic will be Tuesday March 11 at the Fort Washington Country Club.
