Lexus Classic Ends in Exciting Finish

The Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic ended Tuesday with the defending champions reclaiming the title at the Fort Washington Country Club. San Diego State won the classic for the second consecutive year with 23-under 841. The Aztecs never lost the lead throughout the tournament but did get a run by Texas and Cal in the third round. Both teams tied for second place only three strokes from the leader with 844. Cal had the lowest third round with 279.
Oregon took fourth with 855 followed by Pacific (862). Fresno State played steady but couldn't overcome their first round deficit staying at the 16th spot. The Bulldogs posted 295-293-293 - 881.
The top `Dog in the tournament was Matthew Ryan who tied for 27th place. Ryan shot a third round 73 to finish 1-under par with 213. Michael Gideon shot the low round of the day for the Bulldogs with a 1-under 71 that was highlighted with an eagle on the 12th hole. Gideon tied for 52nd place with 72-77-71 - 219. Brad Wyatt shot 76-72-76 - 224 to tie for 71st place. Todd Angel tied for 77th place after firing a 73 Tuesday with 225. Mark Pryor shot 230 to finish in 94th place.
Dean Tonneslan and Chris Arnold played as individuals for Fresno State. Arnold tied for 71st with 8-over 224 followed by Tonneslan who tied for 80th with 226.
Individually Matt Hoffenberg of SDSU and Charlie Holland of Long Beach tied for first place with 9-under par 207. Holland won in a sudden death playoff on the third hole.
"It sure was an exciting finish with San Diego State, Texas and Cal battling for the title," said head coach Mike Watney. "To have a sudden death playoff was fantastic. For the Bulldog team we got to re-group and finish the season strong."
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The Bulldogs will tee it up again when they head to Bakersfield for the CSU Bakersfield Invitational March 17-18.
