FRESNO, Calif - Fresno State's only fall home event was a success as the Dogs downed SMU in an English-only event held at the Student Horse Center on campus. Fresno State scored all six points in the Flat and won four of six matches in Fences to earn the win. SMU does not sponsor a western team.
Fresno State beat the Mustangs 10-2. It was the final event for the Dogs this fall, who return to action Feb. 2, 2008 with a meet at TCU. The Dogs will meet the Mustangs in Dallas on Feb. 22, 2008.
Fresno State opened the morning with an excellent performance in Fences, winning four of six matches. Katie Nenneker was the MVP with a high score of 77 on Ditto. Nenneker, a junior from Oakpark, Calif., has been one of Fresno State's top performers since come to campus.
Other Bulldogs gaining wins included Jennifer Jory, Lisa Well and freshman Courtney Thomas. Fresno State racked up a total of 428 aggregate points, easily outdistancing SMU which had 391.
Katie Sellers, who barely lost to Kristen Collins of SMU, was nonetheless pleased with her performance, a score of 68 on Paco.
"I didn't win the team point, but I was pretty pleased with my ride," she said "I could have done better and I can improve, that's for sure. It will get better."
The Dogs dominated the Mustangs in the Flat, led by Lindsay Blair, who was selected the MVP of the event. She scored a 75 on a horse named Duke. It was the second time Blair previously won MVP honors last season in Fresno State's dual against South Carolina.
Senior Kirsten Sohns continues to have a good season, winning her match. Freshman Tarynn Shada has been impressive, winning for the second straight meet.
"Overall, I was very pleased," said Malmo. "We continue to get good performances from some of the freshmen. Courtney Thomas did a nice job in her first event. It was great that our core of returning riders continue to lead the team. Katie Nenneker and Lindsey Blair set the standard today."
At the conclusion of the Bulldog English meet against SMU, the Fresno State western team took to the ring for an intra-squad meet that included some notable Bulldog alumni. Among those participating included: Sierra Daniels and Heidi Smith.
